CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) will hold its annual meeting at TAUNY, 53 Main St., Wednesday, June 8.

An informal meet-and-greet with light refreshments starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by a short business meeting. Up for action is election of officers and vote on new bylaws. This meeting is also a Shape the Future Membership Event, so two new members can join for half price of the national dues, plus state and local dues.

The 2016 AAUW Memorial Scholarship will be presented to Madrid resident Kathryn Barrett, a recent graduate of SUNY Canton who is continuing her education there in the fall in the veterinary program. The $600 scholarship is given in memory of long-time member Birgit “Biggie” Weaver (1924-2015). Born in Vasa, Finland in 1924, Birgit Weaver was a citizen of the world. She worked as a nurse for SUNY Potsdam and in public health nursing for St. Lawrence County. She sometimes guest lectured on multi-cultural perspectives in nursing at local colleges.

The program, which is open to the public, will look at Changing Health Care in the North Country. There will be a panel of experts in the field to start the conversation including Janelle Jacobson, coordinator for the SUNY Potsdam Masters in Community Health - Population health management and community based organization roles; Adriana Quiroga-Garcia, director of Population Health Management at Canton-Potsdam Hosiuptal; Erin M. Bromley, director of Student Health at St. Lawrence University; Ann Marie Snell, executive director of St. Lawrence Heath Initiative.

Each speaker will give a brief overview of her particular field and then there will be a moderated discussion and question period to follow.
