CANTON -- Michele Whalen will speak at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3 ½ East Main St., Sunday, April 10 at 10:30 a.m.
Whalen's talk is entitled "We are Our Brothers' and Sisters' Keepers." It will focus on the effect that labor, with the help and cooperation of community members, can have on the poverty of our area. Whalen will discuss the effect of the loss of good paying jobs and the debate surrounding the proposed minimum wage increase.
Whalen was born in Morristown and worked at Corning Inc. for 37 years before retiring in 2010. She was the first openly gay officer elected to the American Flint Glass Workers Local 1026 Executive Board, serving as president for over 9 years. She currently works part time at the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg and volunteers at the Morristown Public Library.
