NORWOOD -- Exciting snowmobile racing on Norwood Lake returns Aug. 27 and 28, when Eastern Watercross Association race drivers return to compete in the 22nd Norwood Lake Regatta.

The exciting snowmobile races are possible when skilled drivers combine high speed and daring maneuvers to reach the finish line first. High speed is necessary to keep the machines on the surface and much skill is required to gain an advantage in the turns of the oval course. Drag races are won with high speed and well tuned machines.

A quality craft and vendor show will also take place at Norwood Beach each day of the regatta, along with food and legal beverages. Space is available to vendors at no charge by calling Elaine at 353-2834.

The Norwood Lake Association stages the regatta with Pepsi Cola Bottlers of Ogdensburg, a major sponsor each of the 22 years. The Association uses profit to benefit the community long after the races are over. Recently they provided lunch for 90 youngsters for several days of the Norwood-Norfolk Central School summer recreation program; they provide food and fuel to those in extreme need in winter; they provided $4,000 to stabilize the historic “News Block” building, that was in a state of collapse; they are partners with Brookfield Power in fish-stocking of Norwood Lake; and they recently renovated the gazebo at the beach as a rest for boaters. The Lake Association also provides the dock at the boat launch.

The regatta is a family affair with a $5 admission and children 12 years and under admitted no charge. There is ample parking at no cost with attendants ensuring easy ingress and egress.

If you are one who doubts snowmobiles can run on water, you are invited to Norwood Beach Aug. 27 and 28. Gates open at 9 a.m. with races starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
