CANTON - An exhibition titled "Peter Nelson: Two-Point Perspective" will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from March 21 through April 20, featuring photography and video work on sports, identity and relationships. Nelson, visiting assistant professor of photography and digital media, will give a talk on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the gallery; it is open to the public, free of charge, and a reception will follow.

"Two-point perspective" is a term for a traditional drawing technique, but Nelson also uses it to refer to the possibility that every situation can simultaneously be perceived from multiple viewpoints, and that those viewpoints often conflict with each other.

For this exhibition, Nelson has turned the camera toward his new community in Canton and at St. Lawrence. "Noon Ball" is a collection of portraits of the men who play lunchtime basketball at the University, about which Nelson says, "The games are both heroic and pathetic, epic and banal. Though the players are competitive and aggressive, the individuals form a tightly knit community."

Also featured are four videos, that he says "further probe nuanced two-point perspectives." In "Mr. and Mrs. Nelson," a video with an original operatic score, Nelson's parents share their individual perceptions of falling in love, overcoming personality struggles and negotiating compromises to make their marriage work.

A graduate of St. Olaf College, Nelson holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington.
