SLC Arts Council offering yoga, break dancing, stage combat classes in October

POTSDAM – Yoga, break dancing and a stage combat class are among the offerings from the St. Lawrence County Arts Council in October.

All classes are held at Downtown Snell Hall in Potsdam.

To register and pre-pay for classes, contact the Arts Council at 265-6860 or www.slcartscouncil.org. You can pay on-line at the web site.

• PlaySafe Foam Sword Making and Stage Combat Class with Elijah Vanaver, for ages 8 and up, Saturday, Oct. 1, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays Oct. 8 to 22 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Design and create your own PlaySafe foam sword and learn the basics of stage combat and fencing. Foundation in footwork, basic parries, feints and lunges, and more adv as the class progresses. $45 for 4 weeks, $20 materials fee. Wear comfortable clothing and soft shoes. Sneakers are good, wrestling shoes are best.

• Break Dancing with Elijah Vanaver, Tuesdays Oct. 4 through Nov. 8, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for ages 8-14. Learn the basics of breakdancing from the top rock to the six step to some simple freezes and even work on your popping and locking. Vanaver has been teaching and performing around the world with the Vanaver Caravan Dance Company since 1993: www.vanavercaravan.org. $50 for 6 weeks. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing; sneakers and loose fitting jeans are best.

• Yoga for Your Health with Terry de la Vega, Wednesdays Oct. 19 through Nov. 16, 7 to 8:30 p.m. A gentle hatha yoga class to release tension, build strength and balance, and breathe deeply. Each class includes an opening centering meditation, stretches, yoga postures, pranayama (breath-work), chanting, and deep relaxation. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace, modify postures as needed, and embrace their experience in the moment. Anyone under the care of a health provider is encouraged to discuss beginning a yoga practice. $57 for 5 weeks; students may want to bring a yoga mat, a pillow and a sweater or small blanket.
