POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam's Department of Geology will sponsor the sixth annual Rock and Fossil Fair and Roadshow from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 16, in Timerman Hall.

SUNY Potsdam geologists and paleontologists will identify rocks, minerals and fossils visitors bring from home. The fair will feature a fossil dig allowing participants to dig through sand to find fossils to keep, and a mineral mine where minerals and rocks are waiting to be discovered. Visitors will be able to check out their rock or mineral specimens under a microscope and choose additional specimens to take home.

Actual moon rocks, on loan from NASA, will be on view. Other exhibits will feature fluorescent rocks from St. Lawrence County, rocks and minerals from New York and around the world and real dinosaur fossils.

Other attractions will include free face painting and dinosaur tattoos, crafts and homemade food. A free raffle of a cast of two T. Rex teeth embedded in a short length of jawbone is planned.

New this year are wind-up toy races and, weather permitting, outdoor games and picnic tables set up for families to have lunch. Measurements of the recent Japanese earthquake made by the SUNY Potsdam Seismic Network will be available.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Roberta Greene at 267-2286 or greenera@potsdam.edu.
