CANTON -- Two science day camps are coming to the Bend in the River Park, Aug. 4 to 8. Each day, Bridge Building Camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon and Summer Rocket Camp from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The final day of Summer Rocket Camp takes place at SUNY Canton. These are Engineering in Action programs by Edge on Science, for children ages 10 to 14.
At Bridge Building Camp, children build their own model truss bridges out of balsa or basswood. They are also challenged to think like engineers in real life situations. This means they are thinking about efficiency, economy, form, function and safety. The children are encouraged to be creative in coming up with their own designs. On the final day, bridges are weighed and load tested to failure. Analyzing the cause for failure can sometimes be more beneficial than actually building the bridge.
At Summer Rocket Camp, children make their own model rocket using an assortment of raw materials and parts. They also use engineering design software to test their rockets and make flight predictions. During the course of the week, teams fly water rockets too, competing to meet flight objectives like speed or altitude.
