Sheep and goat parasite management to be explained at Cooperative Extension Learning Farm in Canton Saturday

CANTON -- The Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm, 2043B State Highway 68, is offering a workshop designed to help producers develop integrated parasite management programs for their sheep and goat farms from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Betsy Hodge, Livestock Educator for CCE St. Lawrence, will instruct the class on the different types of worms, how to manage your pastures to avoid increasing the worm load, what the different types of de-wormers are good for, and how to use the FAMACHA system to deworm only those sheep or goats that need it.

Participants will learn to use a microscope to do a fecal egg count, one piece of the puzzle useful when making de-worming decisions.

In addition, each person in the class will have to do hands on FAMACHA scoring on the Extension sheep flock to qualify for an official FAMACHA card.

Beginners and experienced shepherds and goat farmers are welcome.

Cost is $35 for the first person from a farm and $10 for each additional person.

Lunch and materials are included.

Register by Thursday, Oct. 27 with Bobbi-Jo at 379-9192 or Betsy at bmf0@cornell.edu.
