Remington Art Museum lecture series presents 'Irish Settlement Roads' Wednesday in Ogdensburg

OGDENSBURG — The Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington St., continues its annual Art Highlights and Tea lecture series with a presentation by Dr. Sean O’Brien entitled, “Irish Settlement Roads: Nineteenth-Century Stories of Migration to the North Country.”

The presentation will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 at the museum.

The talk is free and open to the public, and will be presented in the museum’s Tiffany Room.

There are at least six Irish Settlement Roads in St. Lawrence County -- and many more across the Northeast. What do these roads tell us about our immigrant history? Who were the people that lived there and what did they contribute to our communities? And what connection does the Remington family have to these Irish immigrants?

SUNY Canton Professor Sean O'Brien will discuss the many intersections between Ireland and and the North Country during the last two centuries. O'Brien has been researching the North Country Irish since he moved here almost six years ago.

Formerly the Assistant Director at the Irish Studies Institute at the University of Notre Dame, he is now an associate professor at SUNY Canton and the co-founder of the college's new technological communication program.

Immediately following O’Brien’s presentation, at 3 p.m., a delicious tea will be served in the museum’s parlors, courtesy of Luanne Herzog, Kathie Wade, and friends. The cost is $10 for Remington Museum members and $15 for non-members.
