Young carp anglers and parents who register for this year’s St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament on or before July 15 will pay $100, a savings of $25 on each registration.

After July 15, registration is $125.

The 12th annual catch-and-release tournament for boys and girls ages 11 to 18 (parents can fish with their kids, too) is Aug. 14 to 16. The fee covers the cost of all activities, including the Mort Backus & Sons Fishing School on the 14th, and the closing awards ceremony and pizza party.

On the 15th and 16th, anglers fish a 35-mile stretch of the St. Lawrence River from Massena to Ogdensburg. Winners and runners-up in team, individual, “big fish” and other categories are honored with prizes and some $7,500 in cash awards during the closing ceremony at Madrid-Waddington Central School on the 16th.

The tournament is hosted by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. Registration forms are at www.northcountryguide.com for download, or call the chamber at 386-4000 or stop by the chamber office and Visitor Center at 101 Main St., Canton on weekdays and Saturdays.

Since 2002, more than 1,300 girls and boys have fished the St. Lawrence River for what is believed to be the biggest junior carp tournament in the country. British actor Tom Felton – best known as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films – was the tournament’s first Grand Marshal, in 2002.

The 2014 Grand Marshal is Matt Conger of Ogdensburg, who first fished in the tournament in 2003, and every year thereafter until turning 18.

To date, sponsors for this year’s tournament include Mort Backus & Sons, ENV North Agency, SeaComm Federal Credit Union, Pepsi-Cola Ogdensburg Bottlers, Potsdam Specialty Paper, Cape Air, North Country Savings Bank, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Big Carp Tackle, Kuno Oil, NNY Outdoors Magazine, Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, State Senator Patty Ritchie, Fort de La Présentation in Ogdensburg, the City of Ogdensburg, the Village of Waddington, the Town of Waddington, the Town of Louisville, the New York Power Authority, and Madrid-Waddington Central School.

For information on sponsorship opportunities, contact Jo Ann Roberts at the chamber, 386-4000, jroberts@stlawrencecountychamber.org.
