Pruning techniques workshop in Canton March 24 for municipal staff

CANTON -- A workshop designed to teach municipal staff about pruning techniques for newly planted and young municipal street trees is set for 9:30 a.m. to noon March 24 at the Canton Municipal Building, 60 Main St.

While the tree-pruning basics course is geared for municipal/DPW employees, homeowners are invited to attend.

For trees that grow in the open, pruning is often essential to produce healthy, attractive plants. Pruning young trees helps develop a strong tree structure that can help reduce tree injury, and avoid problems as trees mature. Recent tree damage due to heavy snow storms and high winds have reinforced how important tree pruning is for establishing good tree form and branching.

This workshop will focus on why, when, and how to prune. Participants will receive an introduction to tree assessment; proper pruning cuts; developing good branching; looking for defects; correcting problems; and how much to prune.

Municipal employees and residents who are interested in attending must pre-register by calling the DEC Potsdam Sub-Office at 265-3090. Tell them which municipality you are from, and how many will be attending.
