The train wreck on Oak Island in 1910.
POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Sandstone Festival will take place Sept. 18 to 21 featuring a Raquette River Paddle Tour around Oak Island.
Participants on the tour can view the remains of the old Hannawa Falls Light and Power Company Railroad that island hopped across Oak and Sugar Islands.
SUNY Potsdam history professor emeritus Art Johnson, will lead the tour starting at the new boat launch in Ives Park, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m.
Bring your boat and learn about the old railroad used to transport Potsdam Sandstone from the quarries just below Hannawa Falls to the Clarkson family stone cutting yards on Pine Street.
There will be walking tours of Trinity Church, St. Mary’s Church, First Presbyterian Church, Old Snell and other historic downtown businesses.
