CANTON -- The combined hospital guilds of Canton-Potsdam Hospital will host their annual garden tour Saturday, June 11, rain or shine, featuring private gardens of Canton.
The registration fee is $15 per person and all proceeds benefit patients and families of Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
The garden tour will launch with a special garden bench dedication in memory of Jack K. Newman, who passed away in 2008. The late Mr. Newman was born and raised in Canton, attended Canton schools and attended Wanakena Ranger School. He worked for DJ Woods Lumber Company before purchasing the business. With his carpentry skills and lumber he constructed many homes in the Canton area, in addition to raising seven daughters with his wife, Joan. Mr. Newman was a fixture of the Canton community.
He was a member of the Canton Lions Club, the Canton Club, the Canton Town Republicans, the Canton Sportsman Club, the Stillwater Club, the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club, and the Canton United Methodist Church. He served on the Board of Directors of the Evergreen Cemetery and served on the Canton Village Board of Assessment and Review. He was also a member of the Canton VFW.
Several Canton residents have opened their grounds for the garden tour, showcasing a combination of beauty, creativity, elegance, and originality in Northeastern US landscape design, according to Guild officials. Experienced gardeners will be available to discuss their designs and provide tips to participants at each location.
Register on the day of the event, between 9 and 10 a.m. Registrants will receive a brochure as proof of payment and a map to the featured gardens. Two registration locations will be held: participants may register at the Potsdam Agway, 14 Pine St., Potsdam or at the E. J. Noble Professional Building main lobby (closest to the guild’s butterfly garden at the east entrance of the building), 80 East Main St. in Canton.
Tours will start in the butterfly garden, which features butterfly-friendly plants and wrought-iron artwork from the Aurora, design house of MacKenzie-Childs.
Balloons will mark each garden entrance and tour participants will be asked to present their brochure to each garden host or hostess.
