POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Food Co-op plans to host a summer baking fest and silent auction at the Potsdam Summer Festival this July.
Modeled after the holiday baking fest, which is a benefit for the Potsdam Neighbor Center, the co-op will now hold the baking fest and silent auction July 13 from noon until 3 p.m.
Anyone can stop by and sample the treats at the Carriage House, behind the co-op at 24 Elm St.
Bakers who wish to participate can enter a dessert for a chance to win a co-op gift certificate. Bakers will provide two identical entries; one is divided for people to taste and one will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. It is the bidding auction that serves as the fundraising portion for the event.
The co-op has chosen GardenShare as its first beneficiary of the event. GardenShare is a nonprofit community organization that works to build a North Country where all of us have enough to eat and enough to share.
“With summer fruits and vegetables, plus honey, maple syrup, eggs, and dairy products we have no doubt our local bakers will enjoy showcasing their culinary artistry while raising money for a great local organization,” said Co-op General Manager, Eric Jesner.
The contest will celebrate summer with three dessert categories, in addition to the special diet category which was popular at the winter baking fest.
Categories will include “The Secret” which is a recipe that will contain a hidden healthy ingredient. Another category is “Local is Best.” Entries must have a minimum of five local ingredients from St. Lawrence County. The “Simply Wonderful” category will be a dessert made with five or fewer ingredients. Gluten-free, diabetic-friendly, dairy-free, and/or vegan will all be options in the “Special Diet’ category.
“We truly have a great bounty of produce here in the North Country, says Laura Popielski, Program Manager for GardenShare. I'm excited to see what our community members can create with it for the summer baking fest.”
Bakers receiving the most votes in each category will win a $25 gift certificate from the co-op. There will also be a special prize for the entry created with the highest number of local ingredients.
