POTSDAM -- The winter season of the Potsdam Community Band will kick off on Monday, Oct. 24 with an informal music reading session starting at 7 p.m. in the Potsdam High School band room.

The reading session is open to anyone in the community who plays a standard band instrument. It will give new players in particular a chance to “test drive” the band to see if they want to make the commitment to join later in the fall.

“It’s a commitment-free way to see if PCB is for you, whether you are a skilled musician, haven’t picked up your instrument in years, or somewhere in the middle,” said Ron Berry, personnel manager for the group.

Band director Theresa Witmer will have a number of works ready for the musicians to read through, some of which will likely end up on the band’s concert program come January.

Rehearsals in preparation for the Jan. 15 concert at SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Concert Hall will begin on Monday, Nov. 14. Band practice will also be held Nov. 28 and Dec. 5 at Potsdam High School, and Dec. 19, Jan. 9 and Jan. 12 at the Crane School of Music, all at 7 p.m.

The ensemble, in its seventh year under Witmer’s leadership, is in particular need of woodwind players, especially clarinets and saxophones, French horn players and percussionists. But any adult player who is able to perform at a high school level or better is welcome to join Potsdam Community Band.

“The camaraderie, musicianship and fun of the PCB family is really outstanding,” said Berry.
