POTSDAM — The Potsdam Community Band will play a free concert Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. in Hosmer Hall at SUNY Potsdam.
The concert will offer a mix of traditional band music and movie and Broadway favorites and is directed by Theresa Witmer.
Starting with a march by John Philip Sousa, PCB will then play Rushmore, in which Alfred Reed uses sections of "America the Beautiful" in a portrait of the four U.S. presidents whose likenesses are sculpted at Mt. Rushmore.
Freedom Road by James Curnow depicts escapes from slavery using the Underground Railroad. The music takes the song "Following the Drinking Gourd" and weaves it throughout the piece.
Representing the "stage and screen" are arrangements of music from Lion King and a medley entitled Broadway Spectacular, in addition to The Beatles: Love.
With between 60 and 80 members, Potsdam Community Band has been practicing and performing for our local communities since 2010.
