Pickleball to be held in Massena for seniors, adults and teens starting June 20

MASSENA -- The Massena Recreation Department and the Massena Pickleball Association will host pickleball for seniors, adults and teens 15 and up starting June 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Alcoa Fields tennis courts.

Pickleball is a mix of table tennis, paddle tennis, badminton and tennis.

“It is a great fit for seniors because it is very easy to learn, doesn’t require the mobility of tennis and uses an underhand serve,” a news release from associations coordinators reads. “The smaller court also creates a social atmosphere, and playing doubles or mixed doubles is promoted.”

There will be two courts going, recreational people on the first court and the more competitive on the next.

Teams will be mixed to make the games interesting and allow the opportunity to get to know new players.

Beginners are welcome.

Those who don’t know how to play will be taught.

Basic equipment is provided but participants should wear a tennis-type shoe.

Outdoor Games will be played Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at the Alcoa tennis courts throughout the summer, weather-permitting.

Additional dates will be added if there is enough interest.

Indoor Games will be Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. at the Massena Arena, when available. Notices will be sent by email for those that are signed in.

Pickleball rules are available at usapa.org

Anyone interested in playing in Ogdensburg, Canton, Hogansburg, Malone, Chateauguay or anywhere else in the North Country can contact Robert LeBlanc, who is also organizing the NCPL.

The group plans to host tournaments as soon as we have enough interested people.
