Pasture management for small farm owners to be offered Tuesday in Potsdam by CCE

POTSDAM -- Cornell Cooperative Extension is organizing a pasture walk for small farm owners on Tuesday evening Aug. 7 at 7 p.m.

Danielle Jerry and Bob Platte have offered to share their experiences working with the Soil and Water District to plan and fence their property.

Danielle and Bob have two horses, a garden, and land that they pasture.

Good pasture management practices are hard to apply to small farms because of equipment needs or types of livestock or numbers of livestock.

Kitty O’Neil, field crops specialist, will be on hand to answer questions and identify weeds and pasture plants.

Certain weeds tend to grow in horse pastures, or beef pastures or sheep pastures because of the way the different livestock species graze.

The group will talk about clipping pastures, rotating pastures, week control and any other topics that come up.

Bob and Danielle will talk about how they worked with the Soil and Water technician to come up with a plan that is both good for the land and fits their needs.

The meeting is an informal tour and will be outside so come prepared for the weather.

For more information contact Betsy Hodge at 315-379-9192 ext. 227 or bmf9@cornell.edu.

The farm is located at 434 County Rd 59, Back Hannawa Road, Potsdam 13676.
