CANTON — Are you ready for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang? Learn about the history of the Olympic Winter Games when Mark Friden speaks at noon Thursday, Jan. 18, at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 East Main St.

The talk will cover his involvement in figure skating, luge, and curling, leading up to his work for ABC Sports as their technical consultant for figure skating. He will also discuss his work at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid (1980) and Sarajevo (1984), and his visit to the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics as a spectator.

Brown Bag Lunches are free and open to all. Bring your lunch and enjoy a beverage and dessert provided by SLCHA.

Descended from nineteenth century settlers of Childwold, Mark Friden is the Clifton Town Historian and a member of the SLCHA board of trustees. With a life-long passion for local history and genealogy, he also serves as Town Registrar of Vital Statistics and Trustee for the Cranberry Lake Cemetery. In addition to having figure skating experience, he is presently a world- and Olympic-level official for luge; he also has a keen interest in curling, having followed that sport around the globe.

The Brown Bag Lunch Series is a popular lunch time lecture series dedicated to the memory of Patricia Harrington Carson, who founded the series during her 24 years as a Trustee of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association. Carson was active on numerous SLCHA Committees, and was an article writer and an issue editor of the SLCHA’s history journal, The Quarterly.
