POTSDAM -- North Country Children's Museum, 10 Raymond St., will host a children’s yoga series starting Sept. 20.

The series of 8 classes, with instructor Kathy Wilcox, will be for children of all abilities incorporating basic yoga and mindfulness through movement, breathing with intention and learning to be in the moment.

This class will emphasize development body awareness and feeling good in one’s own body, regardless of the child’s coordination, flexibility, or athletic ability, said a press release from the museum.

There will be an emphasis on learning to identify what one is feeling in the moment and using fun and creative mindfulness activities to manage the daily stresses of life.

Children will also work on communication skills through yoga games such as building a pose together and going on a “jungle journey” of animal poses.

This class is designed to meet the needs of children for whom a standard children’s yoga class might be too fast-paced or demanding, said the press release. There will be frequent transitions between practicing yoga poses/movement activities, and seated activities that are helpful to relaxing such as drawing, coloring, or singing.

Classes will be held on the following Thursdays from 4:15-5 p.m.: Sept. 20 and Oct. 4 and 18; Nov. 1, 8 and 29; and Dec. 6 and 20.

A parent or caregiver is required to be present for the duration of the class; caregivers are encouraged, but not required, to participate with their children at no extra cost.

Classes will cost $8 per session, per child. Yoga mats and supplies needed for activities will be provided.
