May is Community Action Month and the St. Lawrence County Community Development Program is celebrating with a series of open houses for their neighborhood center programs.

Community Action is a movement that began with President Johnson’s War on Poverty and we want to share with you what that looks like here in St. Lawrence County today, a statement from the Potsdam Neighborhood Center said.

St. Lawrence County Community Development Program (CDP) has over fifty years of experience in providing assistance and mobilizing resources to those who need a hand up, not a hand out. CDP administers Head Start, Weatherization and the Housing Choice Voucher Program in addition to six neighborhood centers.

Attendees will be able to check out the centers and get a tour. See how a food package is put together and see the common USDA food staple products.

Those who attend will also get to see that Neighborhood Centers offer many services and programs to strengthen communities in addition to the food programs, the statement said.

Community partners will be available and Head Start will be present at Potsdam, Massena and Gouverneur locations to help enroll three and four year old children in their upcoming year. Safety Sam will pay a visit to the Massena Neighborhood Center. Head Start is a family /child development and enrichment program.

The schedule is as follow:

• May 17 at the Potsdam Civic Center from 6 to 7 p.m.

• May 18 at the Ogdensburg Neighborhood Center, City Hall from 6 to 7 p.m.

• May 19 at the Massena Community Center on Beach Street from 4 to 6 p.m.

• May 24 in Gouverneur at 15 Rock Island St. from 4 to 6 p.m.
