POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music presents "Mothers of Invention," a free recital featuring vocal music by women composers on March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

The concert features sopranos Deborah Massell and Julie Daoust, as well as mezzo-soprano Lorraine Yaros Sullivan, who will all be joined by pianist François Germain.

The performance includes works by Clara Schumann, Cécile Chaminade, Pauline Viardot, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Ruth Crawford Seeger and more.

About the performers:

Deborah Massell, soprano, holds over two decades' experience in vocal performance in Europe and North America. She has appeared in leading roles such as Pamina, Susanna, Despina, Sophie, Zerlina, Servilia, Semele, Bastienne, Euridice, and Belinda, as well as several world premieres, and performed as soloist in a great number of concerts, oratorios, recitals and chamber music performances, including in many works composed especially for her voice. Dr. Massell has been on the faculty of Crane since 2000. She holds a bachelor's degree with honors in music from Hamilton College, a master's degree from the Mannes College of Music, and a doctorate from the University of Montreal.

Montreal soprano Julie Daoust has established a strong following in the French-speaking communities and is continuing to gain critical acclaim across Canada for her elegantly poised vocal performances. Recently, she was soloist for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Choir in "Carmina Burana" and Joliette's Museum Choir in Mendelssohn's "Hör Mein Bitten and Schubert's Mass in E-Flat. She also made her début with the London Symphony Orchestra in Brahms' "German Requiem" and with Pacific Opera Victoria as Crobyle in their production of Massenet's "Thaïs." A former member of the Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal, Daoust completed her doctoral studies in voice performance at the University of Montreal. A sought-after teacher, Daoust is now on the faculty of the University of Montreal, Concordia University and The Crane School of Music.

Lorraine Yaros Sullivan, mezzo-soprano, is an active and versatile performer, enjoying success in a variety of genres and styles including opera, oratorio, chamber music and art song. Some of her favorite opera credits include Dorabella in Mozart's "Così fan tutte" and Ottavia in Monteverdi's "L'Incoronazione di Poppea," which Opera Magazine praised as "regal" and "affecting." She is in demand for her concert and oratorio work in the U.S. and Canada, with recent performances including a range of styles from Bach to Libby Larsen. Sullivan is an assistant professor of voice at The Crane School of Music. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice performance at the University of Michigan, and also holds a bachelor's degree in voice performance from Millikin University, and a double master's degree in voice performance and choral conducting from the University of Northern Colorado.

Pianist François Germain has performed extensively in Europe, the United States and Canada as a soloist and accompanist. Originally from Aix-en-Provence, France, he is the recipient of many awards, including first prizes in the Radio-France Competition, the Madeleine de Valmalète Competition and the Paul and Verna Gelinas Competition. He holds a bachelor's degree in music from the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud, and a master's and doctorate in piano performance from the University of Montreal. He currently teaches piano, vocal coaching and opera at The Crane School of Music.
