Memorial Day celebrations planned in Canton, Ogdensburg, Massena, Potsdam, Norwood, Winthrop, Lisbon, Nicholville

Canton, Ogdensburg, Massena, Potsdam, Norwood, Winthrop and Lisbon are all planning commemorations.

Locations and times follow:

Continuing its annual tradition, the Edward C. Seymour VFW Post 1231 will hold its Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m.

All participating individuals and organizations should be at the Army reserve center on West Main Street at 9:30 a.m. to line up.

For any veterans who wish to participate but cannot walk the parade route, a ride will be provided. Call the club at 386-8953 for information.

The event includes a wreath release in the Grasse River over the Main Street Bridge. Remarks will follow in the park and then the honor guard will proceeds St. Mary’s Cemetery to honor World War II veteran Cameron Gauthier. A volley will be fired over his grave and taps will be played.

Besides veterans, all law enforcement officers will be honored.

At the conclusion of the day’s events, refreshments will be served at the post, 34 Gouverneur St.

Ogdensburg

A Memorial Day parade and ceremony will be held in Ogdensburg.

The parade will move down State Street to the Ogdensburgh Cemetery where a ceremony will be held.

A Color Guard will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Forsythes Rifles and a lunch will be served at Ogdensburg Amvets Post 69 following the ceremony.

The parade will include the Ogdensburg Free Academy Band, veterans groups, Elks Lodge members, the Ogdensburg Fire Department and Ogdensburg Police Department.

A wreath ceremony will be held in the morning at the Ogdensburg Marina to honor troops who were lost at sea. Ogdensburg Rescue will assist in the ceremony.

Massena

The Amvets will host this year’s parade in Massena on Memorial Day, May 30 starting at 11 a.m.

Lineup will be at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. They will proceed down Main Street and turn onto Andrews Street, ending at Veterans Park.

“We’re getting more people every day saying they want to take part in it, so it should be a good sized parade,” event coordinator Mark Phillips said.

There will be a ceremony at the park with a flag raising, Taps played on trumpet, a rifle volley, singing by Holy Name of Jesus Academy students and music from the Massena High School band.

There will be buffet meals afterward at the Amvets, VFW and American Legion.

Potsdam

The Potsdam VFW Post 1194, 95 Market St., will host a Memorial Day parade at 9 a.m. Parade lineup is at the Potsdam high school. The parade ends at the Ives Park Gazebo.

The parade will follow the traditional route down from Leroy to Cottage Street and then turning left onto Main Street where it will continue to Ives Park, behind the Clarkson University Inn.

There will be a guest speaker and a 21-gun salute.

A BBQ will follow at the VFW for all veterans, guests and family members. There will be grilled food, salads and more provided by the ladies auxiliary.

Norwood

The Norwood Memorial Day parade begins Monday at 10:45 a.m. with a bridge ceremony.

Those wishing to ride the personnel float should be at the Clark-Robinson Post 68 American Legion, 10 Maple St., by 10:30 a.m.

The parade will continue down Spring Street to the park at 11 a.m. Fire departments expected to join include Norwood, Norfolk, Potsdam and West Potsdam.

The mayor, Norwood-Norfolk High School band, and the Norwood Brass Firemen will also be in attendance.

The post color guard salute will be performed in honor and memory of our veterans.

Lunch will be served at the American Legion following the parade. All are welcome.

Winthrop

The Winthrop American Legion will host Memorial Day services throughout the Tri-Town area.

Service will begin at the Winthrop Cemetery at 9 a.m. followed by services at the Fairview Cemetery in Brasher Falls at 9:20 a.m., the Veteran’s Park in Lawrenceville at 10 a.m., the St. Lawrence Cemetery at 10:20 a.m., and St. Patrick’s Cemetery at 11 a.m.

Services will also be held at the LBSH Senior Housing at 11:30 a.m., the Brasher Falls Main Street Bridge at noon and at the American Legion Post 514, 75 State Highway 11C at 12:30 p.m.

All times are approximate.

The Comrades from Canada and the South Glengary Pipes and Drums will participate at all of the ceremonies.

For those that have a loved one that rests in one of these cemeteries that is not on the roster, call the legion at 389-9102 and leave a message with their name, rank, branch of service, era and cemetery.

Free grave marker flags are available at the American Legion.

Lisbon

Lisbon will mark Memorial Day May 30 with a parade and festivities.

The parade will run between the fire station and school on county Route 10 at 6 p.m.

Afterward, there will be an open house at the American Legion with punch, snacks and free ice cream.

Flag Retirement Ceremony

The Robert J Freego Amvets Post, 6771 U.S. Highway 11, will conduct a U.S. flag retirement ceremony at their post on Memorial Day.

The ceremony on will begin at 6 p.m. with a local Boy Scout troop in attendance and performing the ceremony.

The proper retirement of distressed and worn flags is open to the public.

The post has a flag collection receptacle by their front door for anyone in need of disposing their worn and unserviceable flags.

This is a family event.

The AMVETS Post 282 is open Wednesday through Saturdays and all area veterans are encouraged to visit the post, membership applications are available with the bartender.

Nicholville

Nicholville United Methodist Church, 637 Water St., will serve a Memorial Day turkey dinner with trimmings at noon.

Cost is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children.

Takeout will be available.

The building is handicap accessible.
