Many Halloween events planned in eight St. Lawrence County towns

Many North Country communities have a variety of Halloween events scheduled starting next week.

Everything from dances, parades, costume contests, and haunted houses are on tap for this year’s Halloween celebration in St. Lawrence County.

Norfolk

The annual Norfolk Halloween Festival will be held from Oct. 25-28 with costume races, trick or treats, carnival games and other Halloween fun.

The scheduled events are as follows:

Thursday, Oct. 25 -- 6 p.m. kick off dinner at Norfolk fire department; naming of the festival king and queen; pre-sale tickets are $8 or $10 at door, on sale at Cafe 56.

Friday, Oct. 26 -- 6 p.m. Halloween hunt in Norfolk park, kids will hunt for bags of Halloween candy; 9 a.m. adult Halloween party at Coach Tavern, costume judging at 12 a.m., Sudden Impact will play from 9 p.m.-1 a.m.

Saturday, Oct. 27 -- 8 a.m. 5k run/walk starting at arena, runners dress in Halloween costumes; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. vendors in park, kids' carnival games, face painting, pumpkin painting, photo booth, bounce house, Halloween movie, food vendors; 11 a.m. pie eating contest in the park; 1 p.m. parade starting at arena and going to West Main back to arena, following parade wagon rides around town; 1-4 p.m. kids' pumpkin patch at Cart & Barrel; 4 p.m. volleyball at Coach Tavern; 5:30-7 p.m. Halloween rock-n-skate at arena; 6:30-8 p.m. shirt and sip wine tasting at Bregg Winery; 8 p.m. double horror show, Norwood-Norfolk school.

Sunday, Oct. 28 -- 8-11 a.m. closing breakfast at the fire station, 9 a.m. soap box derby, 11 a.m. pumpkin chuckin' contest.

Potsdam

On Friday, Oct. 26, the fifth annual haunted house fundraise hosted by Clarkson University physician’s assistant students, “Nightmare on Main Street,” will staged at 7:30 p.m., in Clarkson Hall, 59 Main St.

Admission is $12 at the door. Payment by Knight cards and cash will be accepted.

Anyone younger than 16 years old needs guardian to attend or permission.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the students’ medical mission trip to Central and South America.

Fright Fest 2018, organized by Potsdam Chamber of Commerce, will be Friday, Oct. 26, starting at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

The chamber event helps promote member businesses and provide Halloween activities for local families.

Friday night will feature late nigh shopping, haunted walking tours of the community, and haunted house events around town.

A bonfire will be held in Garner Park with the Fire Department and Village Department of Public Works.

Friday events are primarily for adults and candy will not be given out. Main Street will not be closed.

Events get started Saturday at 8:30 a.m. There will be costume run/walk and a kids race, vendor fair, book giveaway, ragamuffin parade and fire truck runs hosted, costume contest, dance and other activities throughout the day.

Canton

The SUNY Canton Early Childhood program will host a Halloween “Trunk or Treat” event on Friday, Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m.

The event will be held in the campus’ French Hall parking lot.

Families of children aged 2-10 are welcome, and parking is available in Lot 6

More than 25 “trunks” will give out treats and other fun prizes.

Rain location will be in the Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center’s field house.

The Canton Chamber of Commerce will host Phantoms in the Park on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 1-4 p.m. in the village park.

There will be costume contests, pumpkin decorating, face painting and more.

Candy will be handed out in the park as well as at some participating downtown businesses.

There will be no “parade” this year. Trick-or-treat in the park or through town at your own pace.

St. Lawrence University in Canton is hosting its annual Halloween Fun Fest on Sunday, Oct. 28, from noon-3 p.m. in Eben Holden hall.

There will be games, face painting, music, candy, costumes and dancing

The event is organized by the university's Rotaract & Pre-Health clubs.

Donations of money and non-perishable food items will be accepted upon entry.

Colton

Dave Crosby’s Spooky Town Train is available to see at his two-car garage at 29 Riverside Drive in Colton on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. throughout the month of October until Halloween.

It features haunted buildings, lights, and sounds as well as trains running through the ghostly countryside.

Signs are posted around the town of Colton; and a sign is posted at the end of the driveway leading to the garage with the train exhibit.

Norwood

An adult Halloween party will be held Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6-10 p.m. with the band Sudden Impact at the Norwood American Legion, 10 Maple St.

There will be a prize of $100 award for the best costume at 9 p.m.

There will be music and food, and no cover.

Massena

SLC Arts is planning a Spooky Friday Night Out Friday, Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m. for teens and adults with special needs and their friends.

The event will be held at Nicandri Nature Center, 19 Robinson Bay Rd. and feature spooky and spider themed art activities organized by SLC Arts.

There is a $5 materials fee; paraprofessionals are admitted free.

The Nicandri Nature Center at Robinson Bay Road is planning a Halloween woods walk, Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6-8 p.m.

Participants will venture into the woods as a group, along with a naturalist guide.

The walks are about 30 minutes starting at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The center will be open with activities for all ages and refreshments.

Massena After Dark and Elite Events by Lenny will stage a haunted house in the former T.J. Maxx space in the St. Lawrence Centre mall on Oct. 27, Oct. 28 and Oct. 31 starting a 6 p.m. all three nights.

Teenage and adult volunteers are needed to act as scarers; call 315-705-4146 for details.

Admission to the haunted house is $5 and proceeds go to charity.

A pop-up night club with a DJ and dancing will be held Oct. 27.

The mall itself will be staging Mall-O-Ween on Oct. 31 from 5:30-7 p.m. The event will offer “safe, fun, and weather resistant” trick or treating for local children.

Ogdensburg

In Ogdensburg, the Frederic Remington Art Museum invites the public to Remington Haunting: A Family Event on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m.

For much of its nearly 100 years as a museum, the Remington has been the subject of ghost stories, said a museum press release.

Ghosts and apparitions will take over the museum for two nights of scary adventure and fun, the press release said.

Organizers are staging a “heart-stopping” ghost tour through the museum and a scaredy cat walk on the main floor for the meek at heart.

New this year, "I nearly survived the Remington Haunting" shirts will be available in the Museum Shop (before and after the event) and that evening for $10 while supplies last.

This event is sponsored by America 1 Realty.

Cost is $5 per person.

Ogdensburg Knights of Columbus are holding free children’s Halloween party on Saturday, Oct. 27 from noon-2 p.m. at the K of C/ Martin's Field Club, 721 Hasbrouck St.

Costumes are encouraged and there will be games, prizes and a light lunch served.

The Ogdensburg VFW Post 2936, 1112 Champlain St., will host a Halloween party on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8 p.m.-midnight.

The Amarillo Band will perform, and there is no cover charge.

The Stronger Ogdensburg for All (SOFA) Coalition is sponsoring a “Trunk or Treat” event Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. at the Seaway YFC Impact Center on Congress Street in Ogdensburg.

The event is free to attend.

Children and families are invited to participate. The event is designed to provide a safer trick-or-treating option for kids.

The parking lot and area alongside the building will be lined with decorated cars with their trunks full of candy for “trunk-or-treaters.” Inside the building coffee, hot cocoa and restrooms are available.

Organizations, individuals and businesses are invited to reserve a parking space and on Halloween Night, park your decorated vehicle and pass out candy to our “trunk-or-treaters.”

Waddington

In Waddington, a Kids’ Halloween Projects session will be held Sunday, Oct. 28, from 1-3 p.m. at The Gallery, 10 Main St.

Youngsters will paint gourd pumpkins, paint “monster” rocks, or make a spider web.

No experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided.

The course fee is $5 plus tax. Walk-ins are welcome.
