The TV show “Peak Moment,” aired in the greater Canton-Potsdam area on WCKN cable channel 30, will feature a show a neighborhood makeover at 7 p.m. Nov. 29 and 30.
Host Janaia Donaldson will talk with Jan Spencer, who didn’t stop with a permaculture makeover of his suburban home in Eugene, Oregon.
In an earlier show, Spencer showed how his quarter-acre lot’s lawn and driveway were replaced with fruit and nut trees, vegetables, brambles, and native habitat, plus a 3,500-gallon rainwater catchment system, a sunroom heating the house, and a small detached bungalow to increase residential density
In the Nov. 29 and 30 episode, Spencer takes on the neighborhood.
His neighborhood association teams up with city programs like Neighborhood Watch and Emergency Response to empower neighbors to work together. They transform lawns and abandoned lots into edible gardens, sharing knowledge about energy efficiency, permaculture, and preparedness.
The grass roots endeavors help people feel more secure in their homes, because they’re connected with neighbors they can rely on, the show claims.
Peak Moment airs every week at 7 pm on Monday and Tuesday on WCKN. The show explores positive responses to energy decline and climate change through local community action. Locally, the programs are underwritten by The Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University and the Seymour Family of Potsdam.
In the weeks to come, topics covered will include local food production, renewable energy, transportation alternatives, sustainable building, preparedness and psychological, business, and governmental responses. All the programs are available on the internet at www.wordpress.peakmoment.tv/conversations.
