MASSENA -- Literacy of Northern New York is training volunteers at the Massena Library to work with adults who need help with reading, writing or English as a second language. Volunteers must attend at least four, three-hour sessions of the training course. Everyone who takes the training must attend the orientation and successful tutoring sessions. Those who want to help an adult with reading skills must also take the two BLL (basic literacy learner) sessions. Volunteers who want to teach English Language Learners must attend the two ELL sessions.
All training sessions will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. in Room B of the Massena Library, 41 Glenn St., on the following Wednesdays:
Orientation: May 14
BLL 1: May 21
BLL 2: May 28
ELL 1: June 4th
ELL 2: June 11
Successful tutoring: June 18
Those who successfully complete the course are matched up with one adult who needs help with literacy skills. Tutors meet their students in public places such as libraries. LNNY provides the books and materials used in tutoring sessions.
There is a $25 fee for the training course textbook. Those who can’t pay the fee can borrow the textbook. Pre-registration for the tutor training course is required. Info: lnnystlawrence@live.com or 265-0194 or www.proliteracynny.org.
