CANTON -- Shiitake mushrooms flourish in the great northern woods but need a tending hand to make them fruitful. Local grower Bob Wagner of Turtle Hill PLC will share the skills of preparing logs with shiitake mushroom spawn on Saturday, May 7 from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The workshop attendance is limited to fifteen people. Advance registration is required to receive the exact venue location. The workshop will include the extraction of hardwood logs from the surrounding forest, inoculating them with commercial plug spawn, sealing the holes with wax, and how to lay them up to optimize mushroom production.
Attendees will learn about raising and eating shiitake mushrooms. This fee of $40 covers expenses and benefits Local Living Venture's workshop programming.
Participants will be able to take home one plugged shiitake log as part of the workshop fee; an additional log is available for $15 on a limited basis.
