Jacques Cartier State Park near Morristown is host to learning events in July and August

MORRISTOWN -- Jacques Cartier State Park officials plan a number of summer events in July and August.

• July 2, 10 a.m. - Fun Fact Walk. Participants can meet park staff member Jon Gardner at the Crooked Creek trail head located on the park office road. Gardner will lead a short “interpretive walk” for all ages along Crooked Creek to take a look at some of the interesting and fun facts about local trees and shrubs that grow in the park. Dress for trail walking. Water and insect repellent recommended. Duration approximately 1.5 hours.

• July 6, 10 a.m. - Owls, the secret night hunters of the forest. Join the staff from the Massena Nature Center in examining the anatomy of owls. Participants can examine many props including bird mounts, skulls ,feathers eyes, ears and feet to better gain insight on what makes an owl a skilled night hunter. Activities will include the dissection of an owl pellet to understand an owls diet. Program will be at the beach house rain or shine and is open to all ages.

• July 7, 7p.m. - Learn To Fish With Kids. Participants will learn how to fish on the St. Lawrence and get stared. Local fishing guide Greg Mintz will teach basic fishing skills for children ages 6 to 9. The program is designed for those with no or limited experience. Each young fisherman will develop their skill though a series of instructional games. Once the basic are covered, the program will conclude with some shoreline fishing. Program will begin at the beach house. Participants are require to sign up and be accompanied by an adult. All fishing equipment is provided. Outdoor clothing and footwear that can get wet are suggested. To sign up call the park office at 375-6371.

• July 8, 2 p.m. - Aquatic life in the St. Lawrence River can be an excellent indicator of water quality. Join Nature Up North staff members in exploring fish and aquatic invertebrates at Jacques Cartier State Park shore line. The group will cast for fish, search for frogs, and use dip nets to catch larvae of dragonflys , mayflies, beetles. This program is for explorers of all ages. People should bring water to drink and wear clothes/shoes that can get wet. Meet at the park beach.

• July 13, 10 a.m. - Meet the Turtles. The St. Lawrence River valley is home to numerous species of reptiles. Participants will meet and examine turtles with the staff from the Massena Nature Center. Participants can examine many props, including turtle shells and bones. This hands-on learning experience will include the use of live turtles. Program will be held rain or shine at the park beach house.

• July 16, 10 a.m. - All About Beavers. Come join park staff member Jon Gardner for a walk to a beaver pond. Participants can learn all about New York States official mammal. Examine firsthand how natures master engineer and builder constructs its own habitat. The group will meet at the First Falls Trail head located on the park entrance road. The trail is short and will include a wet stream crossing and mud. Participants are recommended to have walking shoes, water, insect repellent. Program duration approximately 1.5 hours.

• July 16, 7 p.m. - Photography Walk. Noted area landscape and wildlife photographer Bruce Dana will be onhand to lead a basic photography skills walk. Learn basic tips and tricks to improve any picture in the outdoors. People can bring their camera or even a cell phone. If it takes a picture bring it and Bruce will assist in improving your skills. The walk will meet at the beach house and wander through the park. Open to all ages and levels.

• Wednesday, July 20, 10a.m. - Animal Tracks. Join the staff from the Massena Nature Center for a fun look at animal tracks. This program is geared for ages 6 to 12 . Learn some basic facts about animal tracks. Then make a plaster cast of an animal. Participants should wear clothes that can get messy.

• July 28, 5-7 p.m. - Meet the Coast Guard. Who is the Coast Guard and what do they do on the St. Lawrence River. Come find out by meeting the personnel of a boat crew as they visit the docks. As a member of the nation’s armed forces, learn about the services the United States Coast Guard preform on the nation’s waterways, including here on the Thousand Island on the St .Lawrence River.

• Aug. 6, 8 p.m. - Bruce Danna Wild Life and Scenery slide show. Local photographer Bruce Danna will present a sunset slide show featuring some of his unique wildlife and local Thousand Island scenery. Open to all, lawn chairs recommended. Meet at park beach house. Rain date Aug. 9, 8 p.m.

• Aug. 11, 7p.m. - Come to the park pavilion and meet falconer Mark Manske of Adirondack Raptors. A variety of live owls, hawks and falcons will be on display for interactive audience participation and demonstration. Learn the similarities and difference between the different species. Participants will gain an up-close look to better understand and appreciation of these magnificent hunting birds. Lawn chairs recommended.

• Aug. 13 - War Of 1812 History Day. Come experience a day of living history with Forsyth’s Rifle Regiment. This living history group of the war of 1812 re-enactors are dedicated to the education and preservation of the war of 1812 histo-ry. Discover the history behind Morristown’s two major events during this war. See and learn how Captain Benjamin Forsythe’s regiment defended the nation’s frontier border along the St. Lawrence River against Great Britain. Stop in and visit the soldiers’ camp and learn about 1812 camp life. Observe soldiers drilling and practicing skills. Children are invited join in on musket to arms drills. Ongoing history talks and demonstration for the whole family throughout the day.
