POTSDAM -- The SLC Arts Council hosts Aluna Vaqueira’s Introduction to Maculele two Saturdays, Oct. 2 and 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. Students may register for either or both classes.
People can learn the basic rhythms and movements of this high-energy Afro-Brazilian stick dance preserved by capoeira schools and practiced at special events. Maculelê is characterized by the chopping motions used to cut down sugar cane, jumps, turns, spins, and kicks coordinated spontaneously with a partner in the middle of a circle of others who keep the rhythm going with their sticks and take turns leading songs.
The fee is $8.50 per class. Classes will be held in the Dance Studio (Room 230), Downtown Snell Hall. Contact the Arts Council to register and pre-pay by calling 265-6860, visiting www.slcartscouncil.org or by stopping at 51 Market Street.
