ODGENSBURG – Founder’s Weekend will begin with the telling of ghost stories and Colonial tales around the campfire at Van Rensselaer Point at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 20, and continues Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22.
This event is free and open to the public. In case of rain, the stories will be told inside at the Sherman Inn, 615 Franklin St.
Founder's Weekend is open for admission starting at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for military with ID, $2 for children 6-16 and those under 6 are free. On Sunday, children under 16 are admitted free with a paying adult.
Activities during the weekend include Colonial trade demonstrations, children’s muster and scavenger hunt, historic talks with Jack Frost, English Country dancing demonstrations, tomahawk throwing, land and water battle reenactments, fire starting demonstration and cartridge rolling. Children participating in the scavenger hunt all receive a coupon for a free ice cream scoop from Stewart’s Shops.
George Bougher will present “History of the 60th Regiment,” at 11:30 on Saturday, and Jack Frost will present a “Synopsis of the French and Indian War,” each day at 1 p.m. prior to the start of the land battles.
An English Country Dance is slated at the Freight House Restaurant, 20 Market St., starting at 7:30 pm on Saturday.
The Abbé Piquet Trail around Van Renesselaer Point is closed to public traffic during the Founder’s Weekend. Those attending the event and activities may walk the trail when battles are not in session.
The Fort's trail opened to the public on July 7, will be closed from Friday, July 20 at noon until Sunday, July 22, at 4 p.m. as the Fort La Présentation Association holds its annual Founder’s Weekend battle encampment and reenactments.
