MORRISTOWN -- The Gateway Museum is sponsoring a Volunteer Day on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Red Barn Preserve, 518 River Road East.
The museum is looking for people who want to volunteer to work at the farm site to do painting, brush trimming, sign post installations, barn cleaning, hiking trail maintenance, and various projects related to maintaining the Red Barn Preserve.
The Red Barn Preserve was established in 2017 when the Gateway Museum was bequeathed a 160-acre farm once owned by Alan and Lorraine Bogardus. Since its establishment, members of the museum and volunteers have worked to maintain a “forever wild” site, and have successfully pursued grant money and local contributions to establish a three-quarter mile long hiking trail through the pristine property. The site has three large ponds and an abundance of wildlife, including one of the few known rookeries for blue herons in the North Country.
Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and appropriate clothing for the weather that day. Long sleeve shirts and long pants are encouraged. Bottled water and trail mix bars will be provided.
