GOUVERNEUR – The first Gouverneur Athletic Wall of Fame Golf Tournament is set for Sunday, Sept. 25 at Gouverneur Country Club and Emerald Greens Golf Course.

Players can reserve a spot by signing up at Gouverneur Country Club, Emerald Greens Golf Course, or by contacting Bob Porter, 287-4838, or Steve Besaw, 276-6325.

Proceeds from the tournament go toward the purchase of trophy display cases and the induction of the first class of GHS sports legends.

At Gouverneur Country Club, there will be a 10 a.m. shotgun start for four-person captain-and-crew teams of men, women, or both. A full round of 18 holes, with greens fees, cart, snacks and prizes, is $50 per person, $200 per team.

At Emerald Greens Golf Course, 13-hole rounds start at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Greens fees, cart, snacks and prizes come to $40 per person, $160 per team.

Make checks payable to Gouverneur Varsity Club.

If you or your business would like to provide prizes or sponsor a hole, contact Steve Besaw at 276-6325.

Tournament team winners will have their names engraved on the Wall of Fame Cup and displayed in the new trophy case.

The Gouverneur sports community wants to honor its long and rich past. To recognize those individual athletes, teams, officials, coaches, and friends of GHS sports, a local committee was formed this past spring to honor their accomplishments.

The committee authorized the purchase of custom-made trophy cases designed and installed by GHS grad Glen Besaw. Through the efforts of the buildings and grounds staff, numerous team plaques have been displayed. The high school life skills class cleaned, polished, and stored nearly 100 years of trophies. A steering committee established by-laws and procedures for induction into the Wall of Fame. This golf tournament will be their first major fund raiser.

Throughout the spring, numerous North Country businesses and individuals contributed to this effort.

The initial induction for the Wall of Fame will take place on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in Gouverneur High School auditorium.
