POTSDAM -- A new exhibit, St. Lawrence Academy To SUNY Potsdam: Two-Hundred Years Of Education, opens Saturday, March 26, at the Potsdam Public Museum.
Erin Cheney of West Stockholm curated the exhibition.
This image is part of the exhibit. It is from about 1868, during the construction of the Potsdam Normal School, the predecessor of the State University of New York at Potsdam and the State Teachers College, according to Mimi Van Deusen, curator of the Potsdam Public Museum. It was built across from the Potsdam Civic Center where Old Snell Hall now stands. The Old St. Lawrence Academy buildings and the wooden Presbyterian Church were torn down to make way for the new structure.
The men in the image, dressed in formal attire, may be the workers or professors.
If anyone knows more information about the photo or has memorabilia from State Teachers College or SUNY Potsdam that they would like to donate to the museum, call (315) 265-6910 or send an inquiry to museum@vi.potsdam.ny.us.
