POTSDAM -- Training for English as a Second Language (ESL) tutors begins Thursday, Oct. 11, sponsored by the Potsdam Public Library.

Literacy is for Everyone (LIFE) tutor training prepares them to help adults improve basic reading and writing skills and those new to the U.S. speak and understand English.

No teaching experience is necessary. Tutors do not need to speak another language. They learn to individualize instruction to meet the needs of their adult learners.

Time commitment after training is two to four hours each week. Tutoring is done in a public place such as a library when convenient for the tutor and the learner.

The four training sessions are from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays Oct. 11, Oct. 18, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8. Classes meet in the Community Room, 38 Main St., above the Potsdam Police Department.

Another free library offering is for ESL learners is conversation groups at the library to practice speaking English in a relaxed setting with other non-native English speakers.

ESL classes are offered at the library at varying times and days. Monday classes are 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday classes are 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday classes are 9 to 10:30 a.m.

For information about tutoring or to join conversation groups, contact Bobby Gordon at 315-265-7230 or bgordon@potsdamlibrary.org
