St. Lawrence County residents can take advantage of an opportunity to dispose of waste tires for free in Ogdensburg and Gouverneur May 14.
In the effort to clean up the North Country and stop the spread of disease-carrying mosquitoes, Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, has set up the events Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to noon, for tires to be collected for free at the Ogdensburg Transfer Station, 522 County Route 28A, and the St. Lawrence County Fairgrounds, 133 Barney St., Gouverneur.
Residents will be permitted to dispose of up to 8 tires, and the usual $15 fee will be waived.
Each household will be permitted to dispose of up to eight tires free of charge. Tires must be removed from rims and no tractor tires will be accepted.
Ritchie said that waste tires “aren’t just unsightly, they also have the potential to attract disease-carrying mosquitoes that can pose very serious threats to public health.”
To date, Ritchie says, events like this that she has organized since 2013 have taken in more than 30,000 waste tires.
