MASSENA -- The Robert Moses State Park Nature Center – destroyed in March 2010 by a devastating fire – is planning a “Re-Birth Celebration” Saturday, Sept. 17.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Nature Center, the event will run from 1 - 3 p.m. rain or shine at the trail head, just off the parking lot where the previous Nature Center was located.
Special guests, children's activities, a short guided hike, snacks and refreshments, and a silent auction are planned.
Woodcarver Ron Riley will demonstrate “Wood Spirit Carving” just off the paved trail.
A large tent will be set up and plenty of picnic tables will be available.
The Massena Garden Club has been taking care of the gardens by the handicap-accessible trail and volunteers have given the outdoor classroom some love and attention as well in preparation for the event, according to Mary Danboise, executive director.
The Nature Center shut its doors after the March 2, 2010 fire. Since then, all live animals have been in foster care and the staff and programs were moved many times, only to be laid off by New York State in December, 2010.
This summer, the Friends of the Nature Center were able to bring everything back to life, with the help of the funding from the New York Power Authority.
August programs were offered and now the staff is focusing on special on- and off-site programs for the upcoming fall, winter and spring. Details and other plans will be announced at the “Re-Birth Celebration.”
Those attending are asked to call 315-705-5022 or email ncrebirth@yahoo.com for more information. The Friends website is at www.nynaturecenter.org .
