POTSDAM -- On Saturday, May 21 from 3 to 5 p.m., attendees at the workshop "Composting Made Simple: How-To for Yard & Home Food Waste" will discover how to create rich, useful compost with a simpler method that makes fixing your pile possible and also shares how to get started for those new to it.

Volunteer workshop presenter Janet Lomastro's compost bin in Potsdam is the site of the workshop; the exact address will be shared with registered attendees. She has been perfecting her method of supplying her perennial gardens with the rich nutrients provided by home-made compost soil, made from kitchen scraps and yard waste, for over twenty years.

She will share the simple science of compost, plus tips and tricks she has learned for how to create more compost with less work, so that attendees leave with a very clear understanding of how to run the simplest, high-performing compost pile with the least amount of effort involved.

This hands-on workshop is designed to simply and clearly solve the problems faced by many people who would like to be able to compost household waste instead of having to pay to dispose of it or let it rot in a pile outdoors, attracting nuisance wildlife.

Though it is early in the season, a tour of Lomastro's perennial garden landscape is included, showing the uses of homemade compost for edibles, ornamental plants and traditional medicinal herbs in the home garden.

Registration is limited, so attendees must reserve for this event, which is limited to 12 adults, plus interested children. There is a suggested donation of $22, $40 per couple, $10 student, to benefit the non-profit Local Living Venture organization, with scholarships available upon request.

Contact 347-4223 or LocalLivingVenture@gmail.com with an email and phone number to RSVP for the exact location and what to wear/bring. If necessary, there will be a "wait list" for cancellations once the workshop fills up.

The LLV also has other gardening events coming up, as well as workshops on topics as varied as small scale off-grid solar installation, how to build a fuel efficient, low emissions "rocket" cook stove, growing an edible food forest, and beekeeping. For details visit the Full Events Schedule page at www.LocalLivingVenture.org or contact them to get on the newsletter list for future events.
