SOUTH COLTON -- The Town of Colton continues its 2016 Summer Music Series Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 6:30 p.m., rain or shine, with the Northern Lights Orchestra presenting “A Tribute to the Big Band Era” in the Pavilion at Swift Field.

The 40-member touring pops orchestra will perform music from the swing era, featuring many selections made famous by Cole Porter, Louis Prima, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington, including Anything Goes, Take the ‘A’ Train, Sing, Sing, Sing, Moonlight Serenade, Begin the Beguine, Pennsylvania 6-5000, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, Stardust, Sophisticated Lady and many more.

Now entering its 9th season, the orchestra is made up of local professionals, music educators and talented students from the tri-county region of St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, and is conducted by Music Director Chris Hosmer, of Canton. More information about the orchestra is available on its website (northernlightsorchestra.org) and Facebook page.

Audience participants need to bring chairs for seating. The facility is handicap accessible; however, volunteers will be on hand to help people needing assistance. The Colt’s Pride Booster Club will have hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks available to purchase at very reasonable prices throughout the performance.

There is no admission fee to attend the summer series. Donations also are appreciated to help cover performer fees and other expenses.

In addition to showcasing local performers the series also features visual arts. This year, as a fundraising activity, a barn quilt painted by the town’s Tourism & Beautification Committee and Colton-Pierrepont Central School Art Club students during the winter and spring is being raffled during each performance. On August 3rd a two-by-two foot barn quilt, valued at $100, featuring the Star Over Cabin design will be raffled.

The winning ticket will be announced at the end of the performance. Winners do not have to be present to win. Throughout the summer the barn quilts are being displayed in the Colton Hepburn Library on Main Street where tickets can be purchased—2 for $5. Plus tickets can be purchased during the performance right up until the winning ticket is drawn.
