MASSENA -- Sounds and sights of the Civil War will fill the air this summer at the 13th Civil War Reenactment Weekend at Robert Moses State Park on July 26 and 27.
Reenactors from New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ontario and Quebec are expected, including, President Lincoln, several generals and sutlers (vendors of period goods and clothing).
The event is part of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which began in 1861.
Sponsors include Seacomm Federal Credit Union, Gene and Connie Barto, Stewart’s Shops, Canton VFW Post 1231 and Gouverneur VFW Post 6338.
All weekend long, there will be food concession provided by the Marine Corps League, St. Lawrence County Detachment 408, a military encampment and children's toys and games. Displays at the pavilion will include period artifacts, souvenirs, 1864 timeline of St. Lawrence County during the Civil War and artillery pieces.
There will also be drilling, mini-re-enacted scenarios and 20-minute presentations on a variety of Civil War topics throughout the weekend.
July 26:
10 a.m. - Camps open to the public
10:30 a.m. - Ladies activity
2 p.m. - Fashion show: "The Many Layers of a 19th Century Woman"
3 p.m. - Battle
4 p.m. - Basket auction at the pavilion
5:30 p.m. - Dinner
7 p.m. - Camps close to public
July 27:
10 a.m. - Camps open to the public
1 p.m. - Battle and closing ceremonies
The weekend is hosted by the 2nd Michigan, Co. E Reenactment Unit. Admission is $4 per person per day, free for children 6 and under. The maximum charge, no matter how many passengers are in a vehicle, is $15.
