CANTON -- During the Gettysburg campaign, the 15th Alabama and the remainder of Law’s Brigade were part of General John B. Hood’s Division under the command of Lt. General James Longstreet’s Corp. July 2, 1863 was an extremely hot day, and the regiment was under orders to march to a small farming town in rural Pennsylvania. Upon arrival, their canteens were empty and needed to be replenished.

A couple of men were ordered to obtain water, but it was too late: orders were given to the regiment’s Colonel William C. Oates to move forward into action and engage the enemy in blue in what will be known as one of the three bloodiest days in American history.

Learn more about their journey to rural Pennsylvania and heroic actions on the second day at Gettysburg when Scott Wilson speaks at the next North Country Civil War Round Table on Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at the Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St.

Scott Wilson, a frequent presenter at the Civil War Round Table, lives in Louisville and is a Civil War Artillery Living Historian, a Major in the 9th Battalion, ANV, First Division and commanding officer of Alexander’s Battery. He is also a personal owner of two civil war-era cannons, a full-scale 3 inch ordnance rifle and a 12 pound bronze mountain howitzer. He has also appeared on the CBS Evening News in relation to the history of the Confederate flag.

Visitors who own items with Civil War provenance are encouraged to bring them to the event for a show and tell session before the talk.
