POTSDAM – Cinema 10 will present “Wasteland,” a film that follows artist Vik Muniz on a visit back to Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, 7:15 p.m. Monday, March 21 at the Roxy Theater, Main Street.
The 2010 movie is directed by Lucy Walker, Karen Harley and João Jardim. The documentary was filmed over three years.
The dump, Jardim Gramacho, is just outside of Rio de Janeiro. There, Muniz creates a series of photographs of “catadores,” the pickers of recyclable materials. The film shows the power of art to rescue human dignity from filth and poverty, while revealing some surprises about the creative process.
Eric Hynes of the Village Voice calls the eco-documentary “a fascinating look at the complex intersections of art and charity, reality and perception.”
Tickets are $3.50 for students and senior citizens, and $4.50 for general admission.
