Christmas celebrations scheduled around St. Lawrence County

The following Christmas celebrations, events and services are slated at locations around St. Lawrence County.

Dec. 21

• A Blue Christmas service will be held at 7 p.m. at the Norwood United Methodist Church, 10 Prospect St. Everyone is welcome. The service will be for people who are blue and dealing with difficult times at Christmas.

• A winter solstice service will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3 1/2 East Main St., Canton. Info: www.uucantonny.org. Donations will go to the Church and Community Program. Services are open and welcoming to all.

• Blue Christmas services will be held at 6 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 41 Court St., Canton; and at the Scotch Presbyterian Church, Madrid, at 6:30 p.m. All are invited for music, prayer and readings.

• A free holiday community dinner will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Potsdam Presbyterian Church center at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Elm Street. The menu will include ham, ham sauce, spinach casserole, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, salad, rolls, desserts, pies, cookies and brownies. All are welcome.

Dec. 22

• A solstice sleigh ride will be held from 3-6 p.m., at the Iroquois Dam Horse Trails. All are welcome. Monica Stone of Canton Carriages will have two pairs of draft horses with lighted sleds or carriages to take participants from the road parking area back to the Gathering Meadow where there will be caroling around the fire ring. Hot chocolate will be served and guests brought back to their vehicles by six o’clock. The fee will be $5 per person, or $15 per family.

• The Youth Advocate Program will wrap presents for free during the weekend of Dec. 22-24 at Rex Hardware, 125 E. Main St., Canton. There will be a Men’s Night Friday, Dec. 22, from 4-7 p.m. Shoppers can enter to win an iPod, get a Wheel of Fortune Spin, enjoy refreshments, free gift wrapping by The Youth Advocate Program. Wrapping hours are Friday from 4-7 p.m., Saturday from 11-3 p.m. and Sunday from 11-3 p.m.

• An Ugly Frackin Sweater party will be held from 9 p.m.- 1 a.m. at the Lone Wolf Saloon, 107 Church St.

• The second annual Holiday Helpers Meal will be held from noon-4 p.m. at McDuff’s Pub, 59 Market St., Potsdam. The event is hosted by Clarkson Feeds. The event provides food, necessities and toys to families in the local area. The organization is accepting donations to help with the effort. Dec. 23

• The public is invited to attend a carol sing at the Trinity Chapel in Morley at 4 p.m., followed by refreshments and an opportunity to view this historic building. The chapel was placed on the National Register of historic places in 1989.

• An ugly sweater party will be held from 9 p.m.-midnight at Hosmer's Marina, 54 E. River St., Ogdensburg. Wells and the Gathering will perform, a prize will be awarded at midnight for the ugliest sweater, and holiday drink specials will be served. Info: 315-393-3324, info@hosmersmarina.com.

• The Norfolk-Norwood Figure Skating Club will host a Christmas Rock N' Skate and bake sale at the Dominic Zappia Community Center from 5:30-7 p.m. There will be prizes for best Christmas hat and a chuck a puck contest. Admission is $3 per skater. Skate rentals are available at the arena.

• In Colton, the Raquette River Pub's third annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party will be held Saturday, Dec. 23. Live music will be provided by the band Sweet Revenge from 9 a.m.-1 a.m. Info: 315-261-4161, raquetteriverpub@yahoo.com. The pub is located at 102 Main St.

Dec. 24

• A Christmas Eve Candlelight Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Childwold Memorial Presbyterian Church, Bancroft Road. There will be refreshments following the service.

• Nicholville United Methodist Church presents its annual Christmas Eve service at 3 p.m., in the Parish Hall Chapel. There will be praise and carols. Leading worship will be the Rev. Christian Remick, pastor.

• The annual Skate with Santa at the Canton Recreational Pavilion ice rink will be from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation as admission. All donations will support Canton’s First Presbyterian Church Food Pantry. Skate rentals will be available for $3 and the concession stand will be open. Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult and must wear a helmet. Helmets are available for free at the Pavilion.

• Candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. at the Canton United Methodist Church, 41 Court St., Potsdam. There will be a special children’s time scheduled. Info: 315-386-4500.

• The Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 28 Elm St., will celebrate Christmas with a Christmas Eve Service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Robert Letalien will preside. Info: Carol Manske, 315-265-3725.

• Christ’s Church of Hope, 65 Page Rd., Parishville, will hold its Christmas Eve service at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

• A Christmas Eve candlelight service will be held at the United Presbyterian Church, 26 Church St., Lisbon, at 6:30 p.m. There will be carols and fellowship. All denominations are welcome.

Dec. 24 and 25

• Trinity Episcopal Church, Fall Island, 8 Maple St., Potsdam, will host Christmas services on Dec. 24 and 25. On Christmas Eve, a holy eucharist and pageant will be held at 5 p.m., Christmas music at 9, and a candlelight eucharist at 9:30. On Christmas Day a holy eucharist service will be held at 10 a.m.

Dec. 25

• The Canton Knights of Columbus will sponsor their 10th annual free public skating on Christmas Day from 3 to 5 p.m. at the pavilion on Lincoln Street.

Dec. 28-30

• A free Christmas vacation bible school for children 12 and younger will be offered at Calvary Baptist Church, Massena, behind Hannaford, by the mall, on Thursday, Dec. 28 and Friday, Dec. 29, from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 30, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. There will be bible teaching, Christmas songs, stories, trivia, activities and snacks. Pizza and cake will be served Saturday. Children 5 and younger must be accompanied by a parent. Parents are advised to arrive 10 minutes early Thursday night to register their child.
