CANTON -- The 2019 Social Justice Initiative (SJI) of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton invites the public to an introduction to the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) to be held Sunday, Feb. 24, at noon in the church’s Romer Room.
Presenters Denise Mock and Sean Vitali will share their experiences with this program, which provides experiential workshops designed to help communities and individuals break down barriers to open communication, challenge racial and gender-related stereotypes, and encourage self-worth and compassion for others.
Originally created in a New York prison during the 1970s as an antidote to systemic violence in the facility, AVP has spread throughout the world in prisons and communities alike.
Learn more at https://avpusa.org/.
The Feb. 24 session provides an introduction to a full AVP workshop to be scheduled later in the fall.
Come learn about AVP and how it has positively affected incarcerated and free populations.
The Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 3½ E. Main St., across from the park in Canton. To learn more about the church and the Social Justice Initiative, visit www.uucantonny.org.
