Boater Safety Course at Lisbon and Morristown Schools this month

Posted

OGDENSBURG - The Ogdensburg United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is partnering with Lisbon and Morristown school districts to offer its “About Boating Safely” course as part of each district’s after-school program.

The traditional evening boating course is not convenient for many young people particularly with sports and other after-school activities, so offering this life saving information as part of the school day as a new boating season approaches seemed like the perfect fit to the auxiliary.

The Lisbon course will be May 9, 10, 14, and 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. each day.

"We are very excited to offer this opportunity for the students and community members, of Lisbon Central School," said Lisbon Central teacher Julie Rexford.

Interested participants should contact her at rexfordj@lisbon.k12.ny.us or 315-393-4951 to pre-register.

The Morristown course will be held May 21, 22, 23, and 24 from 3 to 5 p.m. each day.

“The Morristown CSD is excited to provide the opportunity to connect the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and a local commitment to water safety education in St. Lawrence County” said After School Director Angela Calkins.

Students should contact her at 315-375-8814 to pre-register.

For Morristown Central students, the cost of the course will be covered by the After School Program. All other participants will be charged $35 to be paid on first day of the course.

Members of the community are welcome to attend but must first call the district’s After School Program contact to receive further information.

A certified boating safety course is required in New York State for any person at least 14 years old operating a personal watercraft (i.e. jet ski), and, motor boat operators born on or after May 1, 1996, who are at least 10 years of age. The U.S.C.G. Auxiliary’s “About Boating Safely” course meets this requirement. The certificate and card are awarded at the end of the fourth day and are valid in New York State and all fifty states. The card is easily replaced if lost or damaged by contacting the Ogdensburg Auxiliary.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard in nearly all mission areas. The Auxiliary was created by Congress in 1939. For more information, please visit www.cgaux.org.
