Battle of Ogdensburg re-enactment is this weekend

OGDENSBURG -- This year’s Battle of Ogdensburg commemoration features a Canadian educator speaking on the “Strategic Context of the War of 1812”, as well as an English Country dance and open house at Sherman Inn, 615 Franklin Street.

The Fort la Presentation Association in conjunction with Forsythe Rifles and the Fife and Thistle of Morristown present the Battle of Ogdensburg weekend on February 24 and 25.

An open house is set for the Sherman Inn from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, with the battle commemorating the February 22, 1813, battle starting at 1:30 p.m. in the streets of downtown Ogdensburg. The battle starts at the corner of Riverside and Franklin streets and ends at State and Ford streets.

Mr. David Moore, will speak at 3 p.m., and the English Country dance will begin at 7:30 pm on Saturday, all at the Sherman Inn.

On Sunday, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at Sheriff York’s grave at the Ogdensburg Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., followed at 1:30 p.m. by the continuation of the battle re-enactment at the Fort de la Presentation grounds at Van Rensselaer Point. All parts of the weekend are free and open to the public.

“The battle includes re-enactors from all over Northern New York and Eastern Canada,” said Tim Cryderman, vice president of the Fort Association. “We are honored to have Mr. Moore as our guest speaker this year. He is very knowledgeable about US and Canadian histories.”

In 1813, British soldiers crossed the frozen St. Lawrence River and attacked Ogdensburg, which was a threat to the British supply lines during the War of 1812. The battle resulted in the British capturing the supplies from the Fort, and breaking up the militia lead by Benjamin Forsyth. The Fort was not re-supplied after that.

Mr. David Moore, a teacher at Victus Academy in Kitchener, Ont., will speak at 3 pm at Sherman Inn about the War of 1812. Mr. Moore was born in Toronto and educated at York University where he earned honor degress in History, Political Science and Education, with additional qualifications in Special Education.

He has taught at a variety of schools in the greater Toronto area, including an inner city school, an arts school and a special education establishment. He has taught at Appleby College in Oakville from 1987-2010 where he was the head of the History Department. He is a past Commanding Officer of the Appleby College Army Cadet Corps.

Outside of school, Mr. Moore has worked with the Museum of Applied Military History since 1979. In 1981, for his efforts in Historical preservation, he received the Bicentennial Medal of the United States by President Ronald Regan. In 1984, Queen Elizabeth presented Mr. Moore with the Ontario Bicentennial Medal. In 1990, he commanded the Canadian contingent in the “Operation Desert Storm” victory parade in New York City.

He is a Captain in the army reserve. He speaks widely on Canadian History at conferences and historical societies. Recently he was the keynote speaker at an international history convention at the University of Windsor; he spoke at the Six Nations History symposium at the Brantford Reverse and the Oakville branch of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Loyalist History symposium in New York City.

His lecturing has taken him to Russia, the Bahamas, Germany, Britain and around the US. In 2014, he commanded the contingent commemorating the bicentennial of the burning of the White House. He has published several articles and was a contributor to the Encyclopedia of the American Revolution.

A long-time political activist and educator, Mr. Moore is now married with two children and lives in the historic village of Ancaster, where he is chairman of the board of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

The Fort la Presentation Association is dedicated to reconstruction the historical mission Fort la Presentation near its original site.

The Association works to unite the community in support of this undertaking.
