Bagley Scholarship Classic basketball game in Canton on Saturday

CANTON -- The sixth Bagley Scholarship Classic basketball game between Edwards-Knox and Madrid-Waddington Central boy’s teams will take place Saturday, Jan. 20 at SUNY Canton’s Roos House Athletic Center.

The with J.V. game begins at 4 p.m. with the varsity game to immediately follow. .

This tournament is dedicated to the memory of Rachael and Leon Bagley, who grew up in the North Country, Rachael in Edwards and Leon in Madrid. After school, Leon joined the military in World War II. Leon came back to the North Country to attend what was then Canton ATI on the GI Bill and joined General Electric in Schenectady after graduation.

There he met Rachael, who was also working at GE. They married in 1955 and had five children.

The two established the Rachael M. and Leon E. Bagley Endowed Scholarship in 2000 with the Canton College Foundation at SUNY Canton. The scholarship was established in honor of Rachael's mother, Ruth McFerran, and Leon's sister-in-law, Helen Balgey, both long time teachers at Edwards-Knox Central and Madrid-Waddington Central.

The scholarship has provides assistance to graduates of Edwards-Knox and Madrid-Waddington Central Schools attending SUNY Canton.

The game is designed to raise awareness of the scholarship at the two public schools, showcase the new Roos House Athletic Center at SUNY Canton, to raise money for the scholarship fund, and to present the current scholarship recipients to the surrounding community.

Admission is free.

There will be multiple basket raffles and t-shirt giveaways. Baskets were donated by the Bagley family and by a former scholarship recipient and SUNY Canton alumnus from Madrid-Waddington Central School, Morgan Johnston.

All proceeds will go to benefit the scholarship fund.
