CANTON -- Rex Smith, editor and vice present of the Albany Times Union, will speak at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, in Hepburn Auditorium at St. Lawrence University.

Smith has led the Albany newspaper since mid-2002 to national recognition for writing, reporting, photography and design both in print and online.

He began his newspaper career in 1974 as managing editor of the Rensselaer Republican in Rensselaer, Indiana. He later worked as a legislative aide and press secretary to a member of Congress from Indiana from 1975 to 1979 before going to graduate school.

In 1987, he was named Albany bureau chief and national correspondent for Newsday, the Long Island newspaper he joined as a reporter in 1980.

He has received numerous professional citations and awards, including the Distinguished Service Award of the national Society of Professional Journalists, a Pulitzer Fellowship and a Rotary Fellowship. He graduated cum laude from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and he received his master’s degree with highest honors from the Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Smith hosts a nationally syndicated weekly program, “The Media Project,” on Northeast Public Radio, an NPR affiliate in Albany.
