AKWESASNE -- The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort will host the 12th Ironworkers Festival on July 19.
Ironworkers will compete for $10,000 in prizes and the title of Ultimate Ironworker.
Doors open at 9 a.m., the opening ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. and the competition kicks off at 11 a.m.
The opening ceremony will include a roll call of fallen ironworkers and the unveiling of this year’s official 12th Ironworker’s Festival t-shirt, featuring a logo designed by artist Joe King of Akwesasne.
The logo was picked out of submissions from an open contest.
Competitor registration begins at 9 a.m. and costs $20 for non-Local 440 members and is free for active and retired Local 440 members. Competitors must show valid member ID or OSHA card to register. Local 440 membership will be verified by an official roster.
Competitions, a chicken wing cook-off and live entertainment will go from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The women’s packing competition and watermelon eating contest will be at 2 p.m. The column climb is set for 3 p.m. and the awards presentation for 5 p.m.
The competitions include rod tying, spud throw, bolt toss, knot tying, rivet exhibition and beam walk.
Live entertainment will be provided by Brian “The Blues Man” Garrow.
Dozens of local vendors will sell food, crafts, clothing and memorabilia.
Returning to compete will be 2013 Ultimate Ironworker Henry Berk, six-time winner Chris Prophet and two-time winner Eric Costa.
