Adirondack Mountain Club hosting hikes, trail work, pot luck through December

The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) has scheduled an assortment of outdoor events running through the rest of the year. The schedule is as follows:

Saturday, Oct. 1, Lows Ridge Hike: 2.5 miles on dirt road through varied habitats for viewing birds and wildlife. Then 1 mile climb to the ridge with broad views of Bog River and High Peaks. 7 miles RT, 450 feet gain. Relaxed pace. Eileen and Tom Wheeler, 386-2482.

Saturday, Oct. 8, Hike Lyon Mountain: The highest peak in the North Country features a well-constructed new trail. 360 degree views from fire tower include Lake Champlain, Vermont, and Montreal. 6.5 miles RT, 1,900 feet gain, very strenuous but relaxed pace. Friday-Sunday, Oct. 21-23, Stone Valley Trail Work: Help maintain scenic trail between Colton and Browns Bridge. Easy and strenuous projects available. Mark Simon, 262-2571 or simonm@potsdam.edu.

Sunday, Oct. 23, Red Sandstone Trail Work: Between Hannawa Falls and Potsdam. Trail maintenance and some new construction. Blair Madore, 261-0751 or madorebf@potsdam.edu.

Saturday, Nov. 12, Hike Azure Mountain: Depending on conditions, traction aids may be needed. 2 miles RT, 944 feet of gain. Moderate. Optional late lunch at a local restaurant. Tom Ortmeyer, 265-8219 or tortmeye@gmail.com.

Sunday, Nov. 13, 5 p.m., Fall Pot Luck: At First Presbyterian Church on the Park, Canton. Bring a dish to share and your own tableware. Guest speaker Pete Hickey, head Trailmaster of the Adirondack 46ers, will describe their trail maintenance program. Tom Wheeler, 386-2482.

Saturday, Dec. 3, Hike Cooper Marsh Conservation Area: On the St. Lawrence River, 30 minutes east of Cornwall, ON. A couple of hours of easy walking (or snowshoeing) on trails and boardwalks through wetlands. Children welcome. Optional early supper in Cornwall. John Barron, 828-2296 or johnbarron@sympatico.ca.

Saturday, Dec 10, Early Winter Hike/Ski/Snowshoe at Higley Flow State Park: Easy 2 mile tour as conditions permit, followed by a campfire at the Beaver Pond Lean-To. Sunday, Dec. 11 - Indian Creek Nature Center: An easy afternoon walk or snowshoe. Bring the family and try it out. Snowshoes to loan for kids and adults. 2-3 miles. Ann Spencer, 379-1383.
