CANTON -- The 50th St. Lawrence County Dairy Princess parade and festival will be held June 6 and 7, with a Big Wheels race, car show, $10,000 drawing and a concert by Flame.

A festival favorite, the Big Wheels race, will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church near Village Park. Children four, five and six years can compete in six lanes of racing for a grand prize of free Big Wheel. The top three competitors will receive trophies while fourth through sixth place winners will be given a medal.

“The chamber supplies the machines to race and will raffle one of them off,” said chamber director Sally Hill.

Registration is at 5:30 p.m. and there is a $1 fee. Registration forms are available at local businesses for those looking to register early.

“The race usually attracts 75 to 95, pitting brothers versus sisters…the kids are always excited,” Hill said.

A car show will be set up downtown Friday evening, covering the area from Park Street to Pine Street. To enter a vehicle in the car show, contact Jim Rose at Boyden Brook Body Works at 379-9853.

Live music and dancing will fill the streets around 8 p.m. for the annual block dance near Village Park at the corner of Main and Park Streets.

Festival activities in the park begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with the parade kicking off at 1 p.m. Participating in the parade will be bands, farm equipment, marching units, the Canton Goldenaires, local fisherman Chris Flint with his fishing boat, local officials, and the Dairy Princess and her court.

“The parade usually lasts about an hour,” Hill said.

The parade will travel from the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services parking lot to Chapel Street and then onto Riverside Drive before turning left onto Main Street heading towards the Village Park.

The parade theme will be “Moo’vin & Groo’vin,” according to Hill.

Parade floats and school buses carrying band members and personnel should assemble in the H.B. Smith parking lot, located on Judson Street, by noon. Walking units should assemble in the same parking lot no later than 12:30 p.m. while fire trucks will assemble in the Community Bank parking lot, located on Court Street at 12:30 p.m. Antique tractors are to gather in the Court House parking lot.

Food, craft, and novelty vendors will be begin setting up Friday evening and continue selling their products through Saturday.

The Kiwanis will hold a “Duck Pluck” fundraiser in the park, AgriMart will offer a variety of cheeses, maple producers will be on hand and there will be around 30-50 different vendors.

There will be someone dressed up as a “roaming cow.” “Agriculture is what the event is all about,” Hill said.

Food vendors will sell everything from cotton candy, hamburger and hotdogs and ice cream. Woods Snack Shack, the Grub Tub and Mr. Ding-A-Ling will all be selling their treats. There will also be a chicken barbecue in the park.

To reserve a booth or for more information, contact the chamber at 386-8255.

The festival will conclude as St. Lawrence NYSARC conducts 34th fundraiser drawing featuring a grand prize of $10,000 dollars at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The winner will be announced during a free concert at 3 p.m. by Flame.

Flame, a group of musicians from upstate New York who have disabilities, has been entertaining for more than a decade touring the northeast playing over 100 popular classic hits from the past five decades and performing original music too.

They have performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the House of Blues; had a feature story in People magazine; and an appearance on ABC TV’s Good Morning America.

The free concert will be held on the grounds at St. Lawrence NYSARC’s main office, 6 Commerce Lane.

Tickets are on sale at all local NYSARC locations and cost $10 each or three for $25.

Local radio station B99.3 will be announcing live at the festival and parade.

A fireworks display at the high school will close out the evening on Saturday at dusk.

“I am hoping for a good turnout as it is our 50th anniversary.”
